Gender, Sexuality, and Health for Columbia Psychiatry Residents

 

Every Spring semester, Dr. Bockting teaches an 8-week course on gender, sexuality, and health to 3rd year Columbia Psychiatry residents. In addition, he teaches how to take a sexual history to 1st year Columbia Psychiatry residents. The objectives of the 8-week course are to:

  • Achieve a basic understanding of gender and sexuality, and their impact on health, particularly mental health;

  • Communicate effectively with patients about gender, sexuality, and health;

  • Address sexual health concerns that arise in the context of providing psychiatric care;

  • Obtain the knowledge and skills to provide culturally-competent care for patients diverse in gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation.

 The course includes special foci on LGB health, transgender health, sexuality and relationships, HIV/STIs, and aging.
